The collective community expressions and activities associated with Carnaval and Rumba are at the very core of Afro-Latinidad. They are at once the popular evolution and amalgamation of distinct African art forms, and the root of Cuban working class expression as expressed in contemporary dance music.
This is Week 4 of a 6–week lecture series. SFJAZZ continues this dynamic program co–presented by the Museum of the African Diaspora in partnership with our friends at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. In working-class Afro–Latin communities, nothing surpasses music in terms of cultural expression and documentation. Self-identity, education, resistance, escapism, and the concept of our history in our own voices are all embedded in the text and sub-text of traditional and popular Afro-Latin music. In this six–week lecture series, multi–Grammy nominee and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director John Santos will focus on how a wide range of Cuban and Puerto Rican music addresses these issues. Recorded music, slides and videos will form the foundation for the lectures with ample Q&A.

SF International Arts Festival & the School of Music & Dance at SF State University to present an exclusive Bay Area engagement with the legendary Cuban music ensemble Orquesta Aragón from Havana, Cuba.
Orquesta Aragón has been a cornerstone of Cuban culture for seven decades, prospering in the heady, profligate days before Fidel Castro came to power and then thriving after the revolution transformed the country’s music industry. Through all the personnel, stylistic and political changes, Aragón has kept its focus, spreading irresistible Cuban rhythms around the world. Always looking to make dancers happy, the band has cultivated a highly flexible approach that allows it to keep up with changing fashions while staying true to its basic sound.
Led by accomplished violinist and musical director Rafael Lay, Jr. and with a creative range from danzon, son, cha-cha-chá, and more, Orquesta Aragón’s classic charanga form their distinctive sound based on traditional son with its African rhythm section and Spanish melodies, over which they added flutes and violins.
The importance of Orquesta Aragón to Cuban Music is similar to that of Duke Ellington or Count Basie to American Jazz. Orquesta Aragón's extraordinary adventure began in September 1939 when bass player Orestes Aragón Cantero brought his small charanga to Cienfuegos for their debut. This Charanga group has gone on to become one of Cuba’s most treasured cultural entities with a reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of classic Cuban popular songs.
Known for such hits as “El Bodeguero,” “La Gloria Eres Tu,” and “Calculadora,” the group has performed in prestigious venues all around the world – Carnegie Hall in New York, Olympia Theatre in Paris, and Tchaikovsky’s Theatre of Russia. They can be heard live regularly on Radio Progreso in Havana.

CARNAVAL 2014: CARNAVAL AFTER DARK AT THE EXPLORATORIUM
THURSDAY, MAY 1ST 6 – 10 PM
¡Viva Carnaval! Inspired by the long–running Carnaval San Francisco, After Dark brings the noise—and explores colorful aspects of this rich local tradition. Now in its 36th year, Carnaval San Francisco is the largest multicultural festival on the West Coast, reflecting the distinct character of its native Mission District while showcasing a panoply of Latin American and Caribbean arts and traditions. Themed “La Rumba de la Copa Mundial—Celebration of the World Cup,” this year’s festival takes place over Memorial Day weekend, May 23–25.
With the help of community organizer, Carnaval Executive Producer, and guest curator Roberto Hernandez, the Exploratorium honors the spirit of this San Francisco institution with an evening of music, dance, and interactive pageantry.
Get a kick out of the science of soccer (fútbol!) with Exploratorium physicists Paul Doherty and Pearl Tesler, or make your moves with samba and zumba lessons. Join a drum circle to experience drumming styles from Trinidad, Brazil, and elsewhere in the Americas while learning the history of different drums. Cheer on Carnaval contingents from 2013, and join Roberto Hernandez to hear how the festival has grown from a few hundred participants in 1978 to a few hundred thousand today. You can also build instruments for this year’s parade with Explorables volunteers, take a mask-making workshop, and parade in costumes from previous years. Don’t miss this Exploratorium take on a treasured Latino and Caribbean celebration—one of San Francisco’s best.
Carnaval San Francisco is an opportunity for many cultures to come together in one spirit to share their creative expression. Their 3–day event starts with Carnaval San Francisco at the San Francisco Giants Orange Friday, and continues with a FREE 2–day festival in San Francisco’s Mission District (on Harrison Street, between 16th and 24th Streets) on Saturday and Sunday offering global cuisine, international music, dance, arts and crafts, and other fun activities for the entire family to enjoy, culminating in the famous Grand Parade on Sunday.
